About the Location

Unique Origins

Perched in Northeast Seattle, Maple Leaf Reservoir Park spans 16 acres atop what used to be an exposed water reservoir. Back in 2009, the city buried the massive 60-million-gallon reservoir as part of Seattle's water quality improvement initiative. What was once a fenced-off utility area is now a popular public space enjoyed by the neighborhood.

Spectacular Views

Designed around the theme "Wind, Waves and Wings," this park takes full advantage of being situated at one of Seattle's highest points. The elevation offers sweeping panoramas of the surrounding area. On clear days, you can soak in 180-degree views of downtown Seattle, Mount Rainier, Lake Washington, and the iconic Space Needle.

If you're a view chaser, make your way to the southeast corner - it's where you'll discover the most stunning mountain vistas. It's definitely worth a photo stop.

Pathways and Exercise Routes

The park features thoughtfully designed pathways that meander through various plantings and trees. Two staircases connect the upper and lower levels, while the outer asphalt path stretches 2,540 feet - meaning two laps around gives you just shy of a mile. Convenient for measuring your walking or running distance.

The paved circular track on the upper level has become a local favorite for walking, jogging, and even roller skating. Many folks use the stairs for an extra cardio challenge, while the flat, accessible paths ensure everyone can enjoy the park, regardless of mobility level.

Recreational Facilities

Sports enthusiasts will feel right at home here. The park boasts courts for pickleball and basketball, plus two baseball fields named the Will Stacey Fields - a touching tribute to a local youth baseball player who lost his life while representing a Marine in Afghanistan.

The two dedicated pickleball courts on the upper level have been drawing quite a crowd lately. Just be aware that they back directly onto the walking track with a slope behind them. The open grassy field in the center is a versatile space great for impromptu soccer games, frisbee sessions, volleyball, or just lounging on a sunny day.

Playground and Family Areas

Families with children will find plenty to do here. The playground goes beyond the standard equipment with a zip line that children of all ages enjoy. There's also a charming children's garden, a sandbox, and various unique climbing structures and spinning toys that keep little ones engaged for hours.

Planning a birthday party or family gathering? The covered picnic shelter comes equipped with power outlets, tables, and even a BBQ grill for public use. It's an ideal spot to host your next outdoor celebration, rain or shine.

Art and Watershed Connection

For those who appreciate artistic touches, check out Patrick Marold's "Confluent Boulders" - a thoughtful installation featuring two igneous boulders taken from the Tolt River and Cedar River Watersheds. It's not only rocks; these boulders symbolize the two water sources that feed the reservoir buried beneath your feet. A nice reminder of the park's unique foundation.

Dog-Friendly Environment

While it's not an official off-leash area, the park has become a favorite among local dog owners. The expansive grassy areas and paved pathways make for pleasant on-leash walks. On any given day, you'll spot neighborhood pups trotting alongside their humans, taking in the fresh air and scenic views.

Recent Improvements

The park keeps getting better! In 2024, the Maple Leaf Neighborhood Greenway Connection was completed, bringing improved signalized crossings and new pavement markings that make the park even more accessible to the surrounding community.

Community Hub

The park hosts community events like summer movies at the water tower and youth sports programs, bringing local residents together.
