About the Location
Urban Oasis with a View
Perched atop a lidded reservoir in West Seattle, Myrtle Reservoir Park is a bit of a lesser-known park. This 4.8-acre space sits on top of essential city infrastructure, creating a peaceful retreat in the neighborhood. The park came to life as part of a larger project to cover the Myrtle Reservoir, blending utility with community enjoyment.
Sitting about 520 feet above sea level, this park actually claims the title of being the highest point in Seattle. That elevation translates into some pretty spectacular panoramic views - on clear days, you can take in the city skyline while the Cascade and Olympic Mountains create a dramatic backdrop in the distance.
What You'll Find Here
The heart of the park is a spacious open grass field that sits right on top of the reservoir. It's nothing fancy, just a simple, versatile space where you can spread out a blanket, toss a frisbee, or let your four-legged friend burn off some energy. We've noticed many locals bring their dogs here for a game of fetch - there's plenty of room to run.
A circular pathway loops around this central area, great for a leisurely stroll or a quick jog if you're feeling energetic. You can find several benches dotted along the path, ideal spots to catch your breath and soak in those impressive views of the city.
There's also an interesting sundial-like sculpture that does double duty as a geography lesson - it points out the direction of other Seattle hills and shows their elevations. It's a neat educational touch that adds character to the space.
Play Areas for the Little Ones
If you're visiting with kids, head to the north side of the park where you'll come across dedicated play areas designed with families in mind. The playground is separated into zones for different age groups - a smaller playset for the tots and a larger playset for older children. This setup gives the younger crowd their own safe space while offering more challenging equipment for the bigger kids.
Getting Around and What to Expect
You'll be glad to know the pathways throughout Myrtle Reservoir Park are ADA compliant, making this scenic spot accessible to everyone regardless of mobility needs.
Just a heads-up - some planted areas are still establishing themselves, so they might look a bit sparse. And depending on when you visit, the grass might be on the dry side, so wear appropriate shoes for comfort.
Good to Know
This park has become a favorite spot for neighborhood walks, dog outings, and family time in the fresh air. While the 360-degree views are definitely worth the trip, note that there are no public restrooms available - plan accordingly!
You can't miss the two water towers standing tall in the park, a reminder of the practical purpose this space serves beyond recreation. The water towers remind visitors of the dual purpose of this space - it's both infrastructure and park, offering a quiet escape with excellent urban views of Seattle.
