About the Location

History and Namesake

Established in 1980, this 11-acre recreational haven was acquired from the Seattle Housing Authority in 1977. It's a park that's also a living, breathing community space.

The playfield honors Walter R. Hundley, a trailblazer who served as Seattle Parks and Recreation's first African-American superintendent from 1977 to 1988. Mr. Hundley wasn't just an administrator; he was a visionary who championed acquiring the High Point site. His commitment to creating green spaces and recreational facilities lives on in this vibrant community gathering spot.

Sports and Recreation Facilities

The park features two baseball fields and a lighted turf soccer field frequently used by local recreational groups. The upgraded turf field helps avoid muddy conditions during Seattle's rainy season.

The tennis courts pull double duty as pickleball courts, becoming a hotspot for this increasingly popular sport. If you're somewhere between intermediate and advanced (think 3.0 to 4.0 skill level), you'll likely find willing opponents throughout the day.

The play area next to the High Point Community Center got a much-needed facelift in 2019. The renovation brought in fresh equipment - swings, slides, and climbing structures - designed for both toddlers (2-5) and older kids (5-12). Everything meets current safety standards and ADA requirements, so all children can join in the fun.

Amenities and Landscape

Beyond sports, Walt Hundley has several areas for gatherings. The picnic area features several tables and charcoal grills - ideal for family gatherings or weekend cookouts with friends.

The park's natural beauty shines through its thoughtful landscaping, with lush plantings and mature trees providing welcome shade on those rare sunny Seattle days. A refreshing wading pool offers relief during warmer months, while a crushed rock path connects the various areas, making exploration a breeze.

Scenic Views and Accessibility

The park offers a view of the Seattle waterfront and downtown skyline - a nice backdrop for your activities.

You can find the park surprisingly accommodating, with benches and sitting boulders placed throughout. These offer perfect perches for reading, people-watching, or simply taking a moment to appreciate your surroundings.

Nature lovers will appreciate the native plant garden along the short, steep western border - a thoughtful touch that adds biodiversity to this urban oasis. And don't worry about parking; street spots are readily available for those arriving by car.
