About the Location
History and Namesake
The park was originally purchased by the city in 1969 for $46,000 using Forward Thrust funds. In 1982, it was renamed in honor of Florasina "Flo" Ware (1912-1981), a prominent African American community activist known for her advocacy on behalf of children, the elderly, and the poor in Seattle.
Features and Amenities
Despite its small size of approximately 21,600 square feet (0.5 acres), Flo Ware Park offers several recreational amenities. The park features a children's play area with modern equipment, including safety features such as a spongy surface to soften falls.
Other facilities include a half basketball court, benches, and open lawn space for sunbathing or relaxation. Visitors can also enjoy chess board tables that double as flat surfaces for eating, as well as a barbecue grill for more elaborate meals.
Art and Community Connection
The park underwent renovations by the Leschi Community Council in recent years, funded by city and foundation grants, as well as private donations and volunteer efforts. Art installations include mosaics created by students from Coyote Central, and inspirational quotes from Flo Ware embedded in the walkway.
Community Use
Flo Ware Park serves as a neighborhood gathering place, frequently used by local children and students from nearby schools. The Leschi Community Council honors Flo Ware's legacy each year in May with a community potluck held in the park.
Visitors should note that there are no public restrooms available in the park. The park is accessible via Metro bus route 14.
