About the Location
A Quiet Location in Queen Anne
In Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood sits Thomas C. Wales Park, a 1.3-acre green space that transformed what was once just vacant, overgrown land. Since opening in October 2010, this little urban retreat has been quietly winning over locals looking for a moment of peace in the city.
The park honors the memory of Thomas C. Wales, a federal prosecutor and community advocate who was tragically killed in 2001 at his Queen Anne home. It functions as both a memorial and a welcoming public space.
Cleverly Crafted Hillside Haven
What makes this park special is how it embraces its challenging hillside location. Designed by Site Workshop, the space features two small concentric loops of pathways that wind their way up the slope, creating a peaceful walking experience that feels almost meditative.
You'll immediately notice the park's most eye-catching feature: a series of raised "Halos" - distinctive metal rings filled with caged rocks. These unusual structures aren't just artistic statements; they actually help stabilize the steep hillside while creating a unique visual identity for the park.
Nature at Work
Beyond its good looks, the park does some heavy ecological lifting. Native plants and trees throughout the space create habitat for local wildlife, with birds and bats particularly appreciating the natural buffet. The thoughtful design also manages stormwater runoff - no small feat considering the park sits on Queen Anne's eastern bluff, an area known for being mudslide-prone.
Your Neighborhood Escape
While not massive in size, the park offers a genuine sense of escape. No matter if you're a resident looking for a quiet moment or an office worker on lunch break, the pathways and views offer a chance to reset. It's clean, well-maintained, and provides just enough separation from the surrounding urban environment to help you catch your breath.
The park's position on the edge of the city gives you glimpses of the surrounding area, making it an ideal spot for a moment of reflection. There's something special about finding this pocket of tranquility within Seattle's urban landscape - a place that balances thoughtful design with natural beauty.
