About the Location
A Piece of Seattle History
Found in Seattle's Eastlake neighborhood, Rogers Playground spans a modest 1.9 acres but packs in plenty of charm and recreational options. Located between Eastlake Avenue and the TOPS at Seward school, this little green space has been part of the community since the late 19th century.
Before becoming the neighborhood spot we know today, this land belonged to David Denny (yes, of the famous Seattle Denny family) who sold it to the city in 1896. The park got its start as a playfield when the Denny-Fuhrman School (later known as Seward School) was built in 1895.
Growing With the Community
The park got a boost during the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific exposition of 1909, as it was conveniently located along the trolley route that carried visitors from downtown to the big event.
Like many Seattle neighborhoods, the area faced challenges when Interstate-5 cut through in the 1960s, changing the landscape forever. But local love for this space never waned, and in 1998, the Friends of Rogers Playground group launched efforts to breathe new life into their popular park.
What You'll Find There
If you're looking to stay active or just enjoy some fresh air, Rogers offers several options. There's a tennis court that's admittedly seen better days but still serves for a friendly match. The fields host everything from soccer games to baseball practice, and community kickball matches that bring neighbors together.
The open spaces are particularly versatile - you might spot anything from casual frisbee tosses to dog training sessions. Around the park, you'll discover benches perfectly positioned for people-watching, reading, or just soaking up some rare Seattle sunshine.
Kid-Friendly Corner
The playground itself isn't massive, but it features modern equipment that works well for younger children. Its proximity to local schools makes it a natural gathering spot for families after the final bell rings.
The play area sits within the park's green embrace, creating a natural boundary that helps parents keep track of energetic little ones. There's something intimate about its modest footprint that makes it feel like your own neighborhood secret.
The Practical Stuff
You'll come across all the basics covered here. Clean restroom facilities are available when nature calls. A few picnic tables provide space for outdoor lunches, though you'll need to leave the BBQ gear at home as there are no grills on site.
Trash cans are strategically placed throughout, and there's drinking water available - particularly welcome during those increasingly warm Seattle summers.
Looking Forward
As of 2023, Rogers is getting some TLC, with the playfield closed until September for renovations. These renovations show the park's continued importance to the Eastlake community. Despite its small size, locals often refer to it as a "sweet urban hideaway" in the urban landscape.
