About the Location
Park Features
Spread across seven and a half acres of open space, Othello Playground offers green space for the diverse communities of Brighton, New Holly, Hillman City, Beacon Hill, and Rainier Beach.
Kids absolutely love the hill slide that's cleverly integrated into the natural landscape. The long metal slide is particularly steep - enough to give you that flutter in your stomach as you zoom down, which appeals to both children and adults.
Basketball enthusiasts will appreciate the recently renovated basketball courts that got a fresh update in 2019. With two full courts available, there's plenty of room whether you're looking to shoot some casual hoops or jump into a more competitive pickup game.
Playground Areas
The playground setup is thoughtfully designed with children of various age groups in mind. You'll discover two separate playground areas featuring different equipment that caters to both toddlers and older kids.
One standout attraction is the zipline that never fails to draw excited squeals from the older children brave enough to try it. There's plenty of open space surrounding the play areas, so you can easily keep an eye on your little ones while they explore and make new friends.
Outdoor Spaces
The large open meadow provides plenty of room to move. This spacious grassy area is great for tossing a frisbee, having a picnic, or simply sprawling out with a good book on a sunny Seattle day.
The park features a network of walking paths that meander around the grounds, connecting different sections while providing a nice route for your morning jog or evening stroll. Many locals have made these paths part of their daily exercise routine.
Keep an eye out for the beautiful flowering tree that puts on a spectacular show for about two weeks each spring, erupting in vibrant purple blooms that add a magical touch to the landscape.
Facilities
Planning a gathering? The park offers covered picnic areas along with plenty of open space options for outdoor meals. You'll come across tables and benches scattered throughout, making it easy to settle in for anything from a quick lunch to a family reunion.
Restroom facilities are available on-site, however do note that access may vary seasonally. There's also a drinking fountain, but it might occasionally be out of service, so bringing your own water bottle isn't a bad idea.
Location and Accessibility
One of the park's biggest perks is its location just one block from the Othello Light Rail Station.
This prime spot means you can easily reach the park from anywhere along the light rail line without worrying about parking. If you do drive, you'll need to look for street parking in the surrounding residential areas.
Community Role
Othello Playground functions as a community space. Throughout the year, it hosts various events and activities, including festivals that bring together people from different Seattle neighborhoods.
The park accommodates both organized community gatherings and casual play sessions. The atmosphere generally matches the surrounding neighborhoods - welcoming and diverse.
