About Summit Slope Park

Urban Oasis

Found in the bustling Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Summit Slope Park offers a breath of fresh air amid the urban landscape. This pocket-sized green haven sits at the corner of East John Street and Summit Avenue East, providing a much-needed retreat for locals in this densely packed area. Though small in size, this space offers tranquility - a wonderful spot to decompress and soak in some outdoor vibes.

Community-Driven Development

What's now Summit Slope Park (formerly John and Summit Park) came to life through grassroots neighborhood initiative. The local community wanted not simply another concrete corner, and they made it happen. In 2018, Seattle Parks and Recreation kicked things up a notch with the East John Street Enhancement project, adding a bioswale and planting area that improved pedestrian flow while boosting the park's ecological footprint.

Thoughtful Design Elements

This park makes the most of every square foot. You'll come across thoughtfully landscaped gardens, patches of grass, and plenty of seating options scattered throughout. It's surprising how much fits into such a modest space.

Skateboarders, there's something for you too - a dedicated skate bench that acknowledges the neighborhood's skating culture. Feeling hungry? The park features a picnic area complete with a grill, excellent for impromptu cookouts on those rare sunny Seattle days.

Community Garden

One of the park's highlights is its P-Patch community garden with 24 plots where neighbors tend to their personal harvests. More than just a place to grow tomatoes and zucchini, it's a living, breathing part of the park's character and a hub for community connection.

The garden features a nice variety of plantings. Roses and dahlias create vibrant splashes of color among the vegetables and other flowers. The contrast of these cultivated plots against the urban backdrop creates an interesting visual element.

Dog-Friendly Space

Four-legged friends are welcome at Summit Slope Park. While it's not exactly a dog run (there's limited room for fetch games), it's a pleasant spot to hang out with your canine companion while enjoying some fresh air together.

Award-Winning Design

The clever use of limited urban space didn't go unnoticed. Designed by Mithun for Seattle Parks and Recreation, Summit Slope Park has earned recognition for its intelligent integration of multiple elements in a compact footprint. The Seattle Design Commission has highlighted the park's understated design and thoughtful details.
