About the Location
Celestial Wonders
The heart of this park is undeniably its cosmic personality. Picture this: a carefully designed stone and earth formation that actually marks the summer and winter solstices, plus the spring and fall equinoxes. This sundial-like structure isn't just decorative - it tracks the rhythms of our planet's seasons.
The park offers sweeping views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. The unobstructed western horizon provides an excellent vantage point for watching sunsets. If you're into stargazing, you've found one of Seattle's better spots without having to leave the city limits.
Seasonal Celebrations
Four times a year, the park comes alive with quarterly gatherings that coincide with solstices and equinoxes. These events feature speakers who explain the science and significance of these astronomical milestones. Kids especially seem to love these family-friendly sessions, but they're fascinating for curious minds of any age.
The park offers good sunset viewing during these celestial transitions. You'll often find photography enthusiasts setting up their equipment alongside families and friends simply soaking in the moment.
A Park Transformed
This wasn't always Solstice Park - it used to be called Lincoln Park Annex until its redesign in the early 2000s. Spanning 7.17 acres, it sits across Fauntleroy Way SW from its bigger sibling, Lincoln Park.
To reach the good stuff, take a short hike up the Sun Trail to the overlook where you'll discover that distinctive stonework circle and the most impressive views. It's worth noting that this space was once a Seattle City Light surplus site, thoughtfully repurposed with sustainability in mind.
Growing Community
Tucked into the landscape is a community garden and P-Patch where locals tend to their plants with care. These gardens add a touch of cultivated beauty to the natural setting - especially nice when bathed in that golden hour light just before sunset.
Before You Visit
The park keeps things simple - you won't find formal picnic areas or restrooms here. Many people just bring blankets and enjoy impromptu picnics while taking in those stunning views. If you're planning an evening visit (and sunset is definitely prime time), remember to bring a flashlight for your walk back down.
Getting here is straightforward even without a car - the Rapid Ride C bus stops conveniently at the bottom of the hill near the tennis courts.
