About the Location
Park Overview
Located in the western edge of Seattle, Lincoln Park spans 135 acres of pristine public land along Puget Sound. Since its establishment in 1922, this space on Williams Point has offered a little bit of everything: dense forests, open meadows, and rocky beaches that invite you to slow down and breathe in that fresh saltwater air.
Trails and Views
With 4.6 miles of walking paths and 3.9 miles of bike trails winding through the park, there's no shortage of ways to explore. The paved waterfront path is particularly special, offering stunning panoramas of Puget Sound, Vashon Island, and the majestic Olympic Mountains rising in the distance.
The mile-long shoreline is fantastic for beachcombing adventures or just sitting on a driftwood log watching the waves. If you're lucky, you might spot seals, sea lions, or even catch a glimpse of whales passing by during migration seasons.
Recreational Facilities
The historic Colman Pool is a must-visit summer attraction. This heated saltwater pool from 1941 feels downright luxurious with its glass wall showcasing the Sound - swimming here doesn't just feel like exercise, it feels like an experience.
Across the park, you'll find athletic fields, tennis courts, and picnic areas with shelters that make Lincoln well-suited for everything from impromptu frisbee games to family gatherings. Planning something special? The waterfront picnic shelters can be reserved ahead of time.
Playgrounds and Attractions
Kids have plenty of room to burn energy at multiple playgrounds scattered within the park. The south playground features a charming orca theme that captures the Pacific Northwest spirit.
While exploring the beach area, make sure to visit the Bruun Idun Troll, one of Thomas Dambo's wooden sculptures that has become something of a local celebrity. This artistic giant brings a touch of whimsy to the natural landscape.
Wildlife and Natural Environment
Forests cover about 64% of Lincoln Park, creating a vibrant ecosystem that supports diverse wildlife, including over 150 bird species. The squirrels here deserve special mention - they're famously bold and might just come say hello while you're walking the wooded paths.
This park has one of Seattle's healthiest shoreline habitats, showcasing the importance of preserving natural spaces within our urban environment.
Historical Development
The park's infrastructure owes much to the Works Progress Administration (WPA) of the 1930s, which built many of the trails, seawalls, playgrounds, and tennis courts that visitors still enjoy today.
In recent years, renovations have focused on making the park more accessible and creating play areas that welcome children of all abilities.
Lincoln Park is a natural retreat enjoyed by both West Seattle residents and visitors from across the region. Open daily from 4AM to 11:30PM, it provides year-round access to its diverse landscape.
