About the Location
History and Origin
Situated in Seattle's Lake City neighborhood, Virgil Flaim Park has transformed from humble beginnings into a popular community space. What started as an elementary school playground found new life when Seattle Parks and Recreation acquired it in 1987 after the school closed its doors.
The park honors Virgil Flaim (1923-2006), a local hero who dedicated nearly two decades of his life to the community as Executive Director of the Lake City Community Center from 1985 to 2004.
Park Features
Spread across nearly three acres, the park features a flat, open lawn surrounded by a gravel path well-suited for various activities. You can toss a frisbee, kick a soccer ball, train your four-legged friend, or simply sprawl out on the grass with a good book on the versatile field.
The park offers areas for both sun-seekers and shade-lovers. One side provides leafy shelter from Seattle's occasional sunshine, while the other lets you soak up those precious rays when they make an appearance.
Recreation Facilities
Despite its modest footprint, Virgil Flaim packs in plenty of recreational options. The basketball court invites players of all skill levels to shoot some hoops or join an impromptu pickup game.
The Lake City Skatespot is a well-designed space where skateboarders and scooter enthusiasts can practice their moves. From wobbly beginners to trick-landing veterans, there's appropriate terrain for everyone.
Playground Area
Kids will enjoy the park's well-equipped playground that accommodates multiple age groups. Little ones can explore toddler-friendly structures while older children (ages 5-12) tackle more challenging equipment.
The swing selection includes baby swings for the tiniest visitors, standard swings for the bigger kids, a classic tire swing for group fun, and an ADA-accessible yellow swing for children of all abilities.
The playground also features slides, climbing bars, and a spinning wheel to keep children entertained.
Picnic and Relaxation Areas
When hunger strikes, head to one of the park's picnic tables, some complete with small barbecue grills. These spots are good for family meals, birthday celebrations, or simply enjoying a sandwich in the fresh air.
Benches scattered throughout the grounds provide places to rest in both sunny and shaded locations, where you can people-watch or take a breather between activities.
Recent Improvements
2017 brought exciting changes with the addition of the Lake City Skatespot project. The renovation relocated the basketball court and introduced other amenities that improved the park.
Community Connection
Virgil Flaim Park is located near the Lake City Community Center, Lake City Library, and the neighborhood's commercial district.
The park occasionally transforms into an event space for community gatherings, and on Thursdays, Seattle Parks and Recreation steps up with additional games and activities for visitors of all ages. Though just off the main road, the park is easily accessible.
Visitor Information
You can find plenty of parking if you arrive by car, however many locals simply stroll over from nearby homes. While the park offers many amenities, it's worth noting there are no restroom facilities or drinking fountains available.
A perimeter pathway circles the entire park, creating a natural loop for walking, jogging, or running - ideal for getting in some light exercise while enjoying the surroundings.
