About the Location
Park at a Glance
Nestled in the heart of Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood, West Queen Anne Playfield spans a generous six acres. This local park sits just across from McClure Middle School to the north and the Queen Anne Community Center and Pool to the east, forming a recreational area that's popular with the local community.
Sports Haven
The park's fenced-in grass fields are used by sports enthusiasts of all kinds. With baseball backstops and bleachers ready for action, these spaces host everything from competitive baseball and softball games to casual soccer matches. The playing surfaces are a bit uneven in spots, but people still make good use of them.
Youth baseball is particularly popular here, with well-maintained diamonds and equipment for practice and game days. The park got a nice upgrade in 2023 with new LED lighting - complete with hoods to minimize light pollution. This allows for evening games while minimizing light pollution for neighbors and the night sky.
Kid-Friendly Zone
Just outside the fenced area, there's a play space for children. Though not huge, this partially wheelchair-accessible playground packs in all the essentials - swings, slides, a merry-go-round, and a climbing structure that keeps the little ones entertained for hours. The layout works well for younger children, and parents can keep a watchful eye from nearby benches while the kids burn off energy.
Park Perks
For family gatherings, there's a small but functional picnic area available. As for facilities, the park offers portable toilets rather than permanent restrooms - not ideal, but functional. When open, the Community Center across the street provides a more comfortable alternative.
Note that four-legged friends need to stay off the playing fields - clear signs throughout the park make this rule known.
A Piece of History
This park carries echoes of Queen Anne's past. Long before today's ball games and playground laughter, this was the site of Harry Treat's stable and track. Later, from the late 1920s through 1958, Queen Anne High School football players practiced their plays and tackles here every fall.
The park's amenities expanded significantly in 1950 with the opening of a field house, which is still in use today.
