The Layout

Sunset Hill Park is refreshingly simple - a welcoming strip of grass that stretches for a couple of city blocks between the street and the bluff's edge.

You'll find several benches strategically placed to maximize the view potential. The protective fence is cleverly designed to end at eye level when you're seated, so nothing obstructs your sightline. There's a modest lawn area meant for spreading out a blanket, and a few picnic tables that tend to get snagged quickly on nice days.

What to Do

This is prime boat-watching territory. Sit back and track vessels as they navigate from Salmon Bay out into the wider waters of Puget Sound. On clear days, your gaze can stretch all the way to the beach point and lighthouse at Discovery Park to the south.

Keep your ears open too - you might catch the distinctive "barking" of harbor seals from the water below. For geography buffs, there's a helpful plaque that outlines the silhouettes of the Olympic Mountains, putting names to those majestic peaks on the horizon.

You'll typically find street parking within a couple blocks, with no restrictions until 10pm. Note that there are no restroom facilities here, so plan accordingly.
