About the Location
A Green Pocket in the City's Heart
Found in Seattle's bustling South Lake Union neighborhood, Urban Triangle Park offers a breath of fresh air amid the concrete and glass of downtown. Since opening in 2019, this cozy 8,722 square foot green space has become a little sanctuary where the community can pause and reconnect with nature.
The park blends urban and natural elements seamlessly, with open lawn areas that invite you to kick off your shoes, comfortable seating edges ideal for people-watching, and thoughtful landscaping that makes you forget - if only for a moment - that you're in the middle of a rapidly growing downtown district.
Play and History Come Together
In 2024, the park got an exciting upgrade: a custom play structure that does double duty as both fun climbing equipment for kids and a nod to local history. What makes it special is how it creatively references the "spite mounds" from the early 1900s Denny Hill Regrade - a bit of Seattle's past woven into a space where children now play and laugh.
Unique to this park is its integrated cafe with direct access to the grounds - a first for Seattle Parks and Recreation. Nothing beats grabbing a coffee and immediately finding a sunny spot to enjoy it without crossing a single street.
Smart Design for a Changing Climate
Look closely and you'll notice the park isn't just pretty - it's practical too. The space incorporates thoughtful sustainability elements including bioretention planters, rain gardens, and permeable pavement that help manage stormwater in Seattle's famously rainy climate.
Art That Changes Daily
One of the park's most charming features is the "Escape Destinations" installation created by artist Janet Zweig. These clever signs display rotating fictional place names pulled from literature, games, films, and other media, essentially giving the park a new identity each day. It's a subtle invitation to let your imagination wander - even if your lunch break is only 30 minutes long.
Whether you're a downtown worker seeking a peaceful spot for lunch, a resident needing some green space, or a visitor looking to rest your feet, Urban Triangle Park offers a thoughtful blend of nature, play, and art in the heart of Seattle's urban landscape.
