About the Location

Riverside Development

Upriver Park is a newly developed public space located along the Spokane River in Spokane, Washington. The park was created through a partnership between Avista Corporation and the City of Spokane Parks & Recreation department.

Spanning approximately 3 acres, Upriver Park was established on land formerly occupied by a section of Upriver Drive, which was vacated to create this riverfront recreational area.

Trail Improvements

The park provides improved public access to the Spokane River and enhances the experience for users of the Centennial Trail. As part of the park's development, the Centennial Trail was realigned and widened to 12 feet to better accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.

The project also involved removing non-native vegetation and replacing it with native plants to improve the ecological functioning of the riparian area.

Amenities and Design

Upriver Park features both natural open spaces and more developed park amenities. It includes areas for gathering, relaxation, and river viewing.

The park's design incorporates elements that complement the nearby Avista headquarters building, including architectural features like brick arches. Safety improvements were also a key consideration, with the park's creation eliminating a previously challenging section where Centennial Trail users shared space with vehicle traffic.
