About Alderwood Park

A Forest Escape

Winding through the trees at Alderwood Park, you'll find a network of walking trails that invite you to slow down and take in the local plants and wildlife at your own pace. Nothing fancy, just simple paths that let the natural beauty speak for itself.

This 6.72-acre wooded area in Northeast Tacoma has been part of the community since 1980, and sits right next to the Kobetich Library - a little forest oasis that offers a natural getaway without having to leave the neighborhood.

Places to Play & Unwind

Beyond the wooded areas, Alderwood Park opens up into grassy spaces that are just right for spreading out a picnic blanket or tossing a frisbee around. If the Pacific Northwest weather decides not to cooperate (as it often does), don't worry - the covered picnic area has you protected for your outdoor gatherings.

Families with kids will appreciate the well-maintained playground complete with swings and play equipment. It's nothing extravagant, but it's clean, safe, and gives the little ones a place to burn off energy while you catch a breather nearby.

Beyond a Park

What makes Alderwood stand out is its monthly StoryWalk program - a creative collaboration with the Tacoma Public Library. As you stroll along the paths, you'll discover pages from children's books displayed along the way, turning a simple walk into an outdoor reading adventure. It's a clever way to combine fresh air with fostering a love of reading.

The park also features an interactive trail that adds interest to your exploration. It works well alongside the StoryWalk program and might make you want to return to see what's changed.

Getting There & What to Know

You can easily access the park through the Pierce County Library parking lot that borders the green space. This convenient setup means you can check out some books and then immediately head outside to enjoy them under a tree - an ideal pairing of indoor and outdoor activities.
