Next to Commencement Bay in Tacoma, Washington, Ruston Way Park stretches for about two miles of pure scenic bliss. This linear park offers beautiful views of the Puget Sound, Mount Rainier, and the Olympic Mountains.

What's cool is that this wasn't always paradise - the area was once purely industrial before being transformed into the recreational hotspot it is today. On clear days (yes, they do happen in Washington!), the panorama is quite impressive, and many locals consider it one of the nicest waterfront strolls in the state.

Paths Made for Moving

The park's paved pathway hugs the shoreline, creating an ideal ribbon for whatever moves you - walking, jogging, biking, rollerblading, or skateboarding. As you make your way along, you'll connect with several smaller parks like Chinese Reconciliation Park, Jack Hyde Park, and Marine Park.

Don't worry about accessibility - the path is nice and wide, wheelchair-friendly, and refreshingly flat. It's well-maintained too, making it suitable for everyone from seasoned athletes to casual strollers. All in all, you've got about three miles of scenic pathway to enjoy with views of the water and mountains as you exercise.

Sand, Sun, and Sitting Spots

Feeling the urge to get closer to the water? Ruston Way offers multiple beach access points where you can beachcomb, sunbathe, or simply watch for marine life. Just a heads-up: the shoreline is typical Puget Sound with a mix of sand and pebbles, so water shoes might save your feet from some unexpected "ouch" moments.

Within the park, you'll find grassy areas ideal for spreading out a blanket and having a picnic with that stunning backdrop of water and landscape. Several picnic tables with benches are scattered around, offering ready-made spots to rest or enjoy a meal while soaking in those views.

Water Enthusiasts Welcome

If fishing is your thing, you're in luck - several docks along the park make great casting spots. Some lucky visitors have even spotted whales from the shoreline (though we make no promises there!). When in season, squid jigging becomes a popular nighttime activity for those in the know.

The boat launch means easy access to Commencement Bay for those who prefer experiencing the water from on top rather than beside it.

Four-Legged Friends Approved

Your furry companions are more than welcome at Ruston Way Park. While dogs need to stay on leash (traffic safety and all that), the long pathway gives them plenty of room to stretch their legs alongside you. You'll find waste bag stations throughout, making it easy to keep the park clean for everyone.

Practical Matters

When nature calls, you'll find public restrooms along the walkway, but cleanliness can be hit or miss. There's plenty of parking available, but on sunny days and weekends, you might want to arrive early - those spots fill up fast when the weather's nice.

Speaking of crowds, the area does get busy during good weather and weekends. If you're looking for a more peaceful experience, try a weekday visit when you'll have a bit more elbow room.

Ruston Way connects the historic Old Town district to the contemporary Point Ruston development, reflecting the area's transformation from its industrial past.
