About Raymond E. Shaffer Park in Vancouver

Raymond E. Shaffer Community Park is a 10-acre undeveloped community park located in north-central Vancouver, Washington. Situated at the corner of NE 58th Street and NE 76th Avenue, the park serves residents in the Walnut Grove Neighborhood and the surrounding area within a 3-mile radius.

The landscape of Shaffer Park features open grassy fields lined with groves of tall Douglas fir and noble fir trees. Recent expansion of the park boundary has added groves of fruit trees and a notable walnut tree. The park's natural setting provides visitors with access to nature in a densely populated area of the city.

In 2018, Washington Trails Association (WTA) partnered with the City of Vancouver to construct soft surface trails throughout the park. These trails form loops that are popular among local residents for walking and enjoying the outdoors. The park's fence has also made it a favored spot for dog owners in the community.

Shaffer Park has an interesting history. Edith Shaffer sold the property to the City of Vancouver in 2010, with the intention of naming the future park after her late husband, Raymond E. Shaffer. Initially, about 8 acres were opened for public use as an undeveloped community park. The remaining portion, where the Shaffer home stood, became available for public use in late 2021 after the site was cleared.

The City of Vancouver is currently in the process of developing Raymond E. Shaffer Community Park. Plans are being made to add various amenities and features to enhance the park's usability and appeal to the community. The city is seeking public input to help shape the future of this community space.

As with other Vancouver City Parks, Raymond E. Shaffer Community Park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
