Park Overview

Nakoma Park spans 5.21 acres in Madison, Wisconsin, and despite its somewhat narrow, elongated shape sandwiched between roads, it maintains a wonderfully natural, forest-like atmosphere. The preserved rocks and trees have a way of making you forget you're in the middle of a neighborhood.

Unlike your typical flat city park, Nakoma's terrain has character - it dips and rises like a small valley, creating a landscape that invites exploration rather than just a simple stroll.

One of the park's standout features is the creek that meanders through it. Local kids have turned the rocky creek bed into a natural playground, hopping from stone to stone - definitely more exciting than your average jungle gym!

Hours and Access

You can enjoy this little glimpse of nature daily from 4:00 AM (for you early birds) until 10:00 PM.

School Partnership

The park has a pretty cool arrangement with Thoreau Elementary School that's been going strong for over three decades. During school hours, the playground belongs to the students, but once the school day ends, it's all yours. It's a smart way to make the most of the space for everyone in the community.

Recreational Facilities

If you're looking to stay active or just have some fun, Nakoma Park offers several options. There's a versatile tennis court that doubles as a pickleball court - meant for whatever racquet sport you're into.
