About Orton Park

A Piece of Madison's Past

Nestled in the heart of Madison's Marquette neighborhood, Orton Park offers a peaceful 3.5-acre escape that carries more history than you might guess at first glance. This isn't just any green space - it's Madison's first public park and oldest city park, officially established in 1887.

Interestingly, before becoming the leafy haven it is today, this land served as the village cemetery back in 1846 when Madison was just finding its footing. In 1877, they relocated the burial grounds to Forest Hill Cemetery, and by 1883, the site began its new life as a city park. It was named after Harlow S. Orton, a former Madison mayor and Wisconsin Supreme Court justice - quite the resume!

Natural Beauty That Speaks Volumes

Walking through Orton Park today puts you under the branches of oak and hickory trees that have been there for more than 175 years. These ancient giants create a natural ceiling that keeps the park surprisingly cool even on scorching summer days.

At the heart of the park stands a charming white-pillared gazebo perched on a raised stone platform. This isn't just architectural eye candy - it's where the community comes together, and you can even reserve it for your own gatherings if you're planning something special.

A diagonal pathway cuts through the park, ideal for a quick shortcut or a leisurely stroll. Despite covering just one city block, this compact green space offers a nice retreat from urban life.

Play and Recreation Options

If you're visiting with kids, you'll appreciate the standard playground equipment - swings, slides, and climbing structures - all conveniently shaded by those magnificent trees. There's even an old felled oak that's been creatively incorporated into the play area, blending natural and constructed play spaces.

The open grassy areas are well-suited for impromptu games of kickball or just spreading out a blanket. Basketball courts are also available when you're in the mood for something more active.

Where Community Happens

Since its early days, Orton Park has been where neighbors connect. Back in the late 19th century, you might have found yourself at a band concert or ice cream social here.

That community spirit continues today. The annual Orton Park Festival, running since 1965, features local music, food vendors, and artisan crafts. One of the festival's most unique features is the Cycropia Aerial Dance troupe, who have traditionally used the park's mighty oaks as natural performance structures - definitely not something you see in every neighborhood park!

Year-round, the park hosts various events from string quartet performances to family activities that bring the Williamson Street neighborhood together.

Historical Significance

This isn't just a pretty place to spend an afternoon - Orton Park carries official historical weight. It earned designation as a City of Madison landmark in 1975 and appears on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its role in Madison's development and its continuing importance to the community.

Good to Know Before You Go

Orton Park welcomes visitors daily from 4AM to 10PM. You'll discover drinking water available, but there are no permanent bathroom facilities on site. Dog lovers can bring their furry friends along, but remember to keep them leashed at all times.
