About the Location

Historic Origins

Situated in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood, Gordon Park spans 24.3 acres of green space about 2.25 miles from downtown. The park sits on elevated ground at the corner of Humboldt Boulevard and East Locust Street, stretching down the bluffs to kiss the west bank of the Milwaukee River all the way to North Avenue.

This urban oasis has quite the backstory. Originally home to the Gordon family and their unique octagon house, the land was scooped up by the Milwaukee Park Commission in 1907. Since then, it's evolved through various transformations to become the community treasure it is today.

Architectural Features

One standout structure you'll notice is the bathhouse, a Colonial Revival space built in 1940. Designed by local architect George F. Spinti Jr., this limestone building is an excellent example of Milwaukee's architectural heritage.

Interestingly, the park once featured swimming areas in the Milwaukee River, but these closed in 1937 when pollution became a concern. Adapting to the times, the park first added an in-ground pool, which was later replaced with a more family-friendly splash pad in the mid-1990s.

Recreational Amenities

Gordon Park offers options whether you're looking to break a sweat or just unwind. The grounds feature a playground for the little ones, picnic areas meant for summer gatherings, meandering walking trails, and several sports facilities.

One highlight is the Oak Leaf Trail that winds through the property. This paved path is ideal for a morning jog, leisurely bike ride, or evening stroll. And thanks to the park's elevated position, you'll be treated to some pretty spectacular views of the Milwaukee River and surrounding landscapes.

Recent Improvements

Gordon Park hasn't been resting on its laurels. In 2000, the park received new walkways and a soccer field that's become a neighborhood favorite.

The following year brought even more enhancements with the addition of a 5,000 sq. ft. pavilion, expanded parking, and that refreshing splash pad mentioned earlier.

Gordon Park provides a green haven in the heart of Riverwest and a welcome respite from city life. It's where nature thrives within urban boundaries and Milwaukee's past and present meet.
