About the Location
A Rich Legacy
Found in Milwaukee's north side, Harriet Tubman Park is more than just a green space. Renamed in 2021 from its former identity as Wahl Park, this 12.4-acre park now honors the abolitionist who guided enslaved people to freedom through the Underground Railroad. The renaming wasn't just a change of signage - it represents the community's commitment to preserving Tubman's legacy and educating future generations about her extraordinary courage.
The park reminds visitors of Milwaukee's own role in the Underground Railroad and the broader American journey toward freedom and equality.
What You'll Find Here
There's something refreshingly simple about Tubman Park's layout. The sprawling green spaces invite you to spread out a blanket, toss a frisbee, or simply breathe in some fresh air. Multi-use fields dominate the center of the park, great for impromptu soccer matches or football games (just remember to bring your own equipment).
Mature trees line the perimeter, offering welcome shade on sunny days and creating a natural border between the park and surrounding neighborhood. The growing tree canopy - with new additions being planted regularly - adds to the park's evolving character.
Get Moving
The basketball courts are well-maintained, drawing players from throughout the neighborhood. Whether you're looking for a pickup game or just want to practice your jump shot, these courts are a good option.
For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, a peaceful walking trail winds alongside Lincoln Creek. It's an ideal path for morning jogs, afternoon strolls, or simply finding a moment of connection with nature without leaving the city.
Family Fun
If you're visiting with kids, head straight to the playground area where equipment suits various ages and energy levels. The setup includes classic swings and slides alongside jungle gym equipment and a seated spinner that's bound to produce some giggles.
During summer months, the wading pool becomes a hub of activity as children splash and cool off from the Midwest heat.
Need a spot for a family gathering? The park shelter provides a fantastic setting for reunions, birthday celebrations, or Sunday afternoon barbecues. It's become something of a community tradition to host cookouts here when the weather cooperates.
Community Heart
The park pulses with community life throughout the year. A weekly church service finds its home here on Sunday mornings at 11:30 (weather permitting), while special events like National Night Out bring neighbors together in celebration.
With its mix of active recreation spaces and quiet corners, Harriet Tubman Park is a neighborhood gathering place where you can find your own way to enjoy the outdoors.
