About the Location

A Glimpse of History by the Lake

Right next to the shores of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, Lake Park spreads across 138 acres of urban greenery with a story to tell. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the same landscape architect behind New York's Central Park. Dating back to the late 19th century, Lake Park combines history and nature in the heart of Milwaukee.

When you wander through, you'll notice how the landscape unfolds with winding paths, charming rustic bridges, and natural ravines. The views of Lake Michigan are quite impressive. Olmsted worked with the existing landscape - forested bluffs and deep ravines - creating a space that feels larger than its actual size.

Landmarks Worth Discovering

Make your way to the North Point Lighthouse, a piece of history from 1855 that now is a museum. If you're up for a bit of a climb (84 steps to be exact), you'll be rewarded with panoramic lake views that are worth every step. Just note that it's only open on weekends and there's a small entrance fee.

History buffs will appreciate Milwaukee's last remaining Native American mound preserved within the park - a quiet reminder of those who came before us.

The Lake Park Pavilion has been the heart of the park since 1903. Designed by Alfred C. Clas, what started as a simple picnic shelter has become a gathering place for generations of Milwaukee residents.

Don't miss the Lions Bridge with its impressive statues - crafted by the same talented artist behind the iconic lions at the New York Public Library. And if you visit the grand staircase added in 1908, you can descend from the pavilion to a lovely lakeshore promenade below.

Nature's Canvas

The park offers a beautiful blend of open meadows and wooded areas, creating homes for all sorts of plants and animals. Birdwatchers will find plenty to see, especially during migration seasons when many species pass through the area. Even year-round, you can spot various birds around the feeders near the General Erastus statue.

The park's hidden ravines, small waterfalls, and secluded paths offer quiet moments away from city life. While there are plenty of recreational facilities, the park maintains peaceful spaces where you can simply sit and soak in nature.

Play All Day

Lake Park offers recreational activities as well as natural beauty. You'll come across tennis courts, a playground that kids of all ages enjoy, and plenty of trails for walking and biking. Golf enthusiasts can tee off at the par-3 golf course, which offers a casual, affordable round with some seriously scenic lake views.

Summer evenings come alive with Musical Mondays, where local musicians perform outdoor concerts that bring everyone together. Grab a chair, pack a picnic, and join the community on the lawn while food and beverage trucks provide refreshments.

The park's position on the bluffs makes it an excellent spot to watch special events like air shows over Lake Michigan. And those wide, grassy areas? Perfect for spreading out a blanket for picnics, tossing a frisbee, or simply lounging with a good book.

A Living Legacy

In 1993, Lake Park earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places, acknowledging both Olmsted's brilliant design and the park's cultural significance to Milwaukee. A unique feature is the Poets Walk, with 56 benches inscribed with nature poems installed by Lake Park Friends. This thoughtful path stretches over 4 miles and connects to other Olmsted parks throughout Milwaukee.

Today, Lake Park serves the community as a green space and retreat from urban life. With its lakeside setting, historic landmarks, and various activities, it's a place where past and present connect.
