Pompeii Square

This little 0.4-acre park might not be the grandest green space in Milwaukee, but it carries a weight of history that makes it special. Pompeii Square sits where North Jackson and East Kilbourn Avenue meet in downtown Milwaukee, and it stands as a living memorial to the Our Lady of Pompeii Church that once graced this neighborhood.

Back in 1967, when the church - lovingly nicknamed "The Little Pink Church" by locals - faced demolition to make way for Interstate 794, the community wasn't ready to let its memory fade into the concrete landscape. Instead, they created this square as a small but significant victory for preserving Milwaukee's Italian-American heritage.
