The square stands as a living memorial to the Our Lady of Pompeii Church that once graced this neighborhood. Back in 1967, when the church (lovingly nicknamed "The Little Pink Church" by locals) faced demolition to make way for Interstate 794, the community wasn't ready to let its memory fade into the concrete landscape. Instead, they created this square - a small but significant victory for preserving Milwaukee's Italian-American heritage.
