About the Location
Location and Setting
Arthur Shores Park is a cozy 2.67-acre green sanctuary nestled in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama. Shaped like a triangle, it's tucked between 19th Street North, F. L. Shuttlesworth Drive, and 12th and 13th Avenue North. You can find it right across from the historic Oak Hill Cemetery in the Druid Hills neighborhood on Birmingham's Northside.
History and Dedication
This community space came to life in 1986 when the Birmingham City Council, alongside the Druid Hills Neighborhood Association and Druid Hills Concerned Citizens, established it as a tribute to Arthur Shores, an influential attorney and Civil Rights leader who helped shape the city's history.
The park expanded its offerings in 1992 with the addition of a small terraced amphitheater, made possible by $600,000 in bond funding. One of the park's most meaningful features is a granite monument honoring Arthur Shores himself, which was created through a community fund-raising effort spearheaded by Jesse Lewis, the publisher of the Birmingham Times.
Amenities and Features
When you visit, you'll discover several charming elements throughout the grounds. The park features a circular trellis that adds architectural interest, a play area where kids can burn off energy, and picnic pavilions ideal for family lunches or small gatherings. The terraced amphitheater is a natural community hub for local events.
Arthur Shores Park offers a peaceful retreat from the bustle of city life, with space for a leisurely stroll, family outings, or community celebrations. It's a pleasant part of Birmingham's urban landscape and one of several green spaces throughout the city.
