Phelan Park
About Phelan Park
A Slice of Birmingham History
Tucked away in the Five Points South area of Birmingham, Phelan Park (or Triangle Park as locals often call it) is a charming little green space with quite a story to tell. Dating back to 1907, this nearby park was named after the Phelan family - pretty big deals in early Birmingham. True to its nickname, the park sits in a distinctive triangle formed by 13th and 14th Avenues South at 15th Street South, with roads framing all three sides.
Historic Recognition
This isn't just any ordinary park - it's actually part of the Phelan Park Historic District, which earned its spot on the National Register of Historic Places back in 1989. The district stretches roughly between 13th Avenue South, 14th Street South, 16th Avenue South, and 13th Place South, preserving a significant piece of Birmingham's past.
How It All Started
The early 1900s were booming times for this area. When the South 15th Street streetcar line opened in 1907, the Phelan sisters saw an opportunity and quickly resurveyed their land to create more lots for sale. The park became a central feature in this growing neighborhood, anchoring the community as it developed around it.
A New Deal Facelift
During the Great Depression era, Phelan Park got some love thanks to a Works Progress Administration project. These Depression-era improvements helped shape the park into what you see today - a modest but meaningful space that continues to tell the story of Birmingham's urban evolution.
What You'll Find There
Nothing fancy here, but that's part of the charm. You can find tables and chairs well-suited for chess games, afternoon picnics, or just catching up with neighbors. The open grassy areas give you room to stretch out or toss a frisbee. While there aren't any permanent grills installed, many folks bring their portable ones for impromptu cookouts.
Good to Know
Just a heads up - there aren't any water fountains or public restrooms in the park itself. You might find facilities at nearby businesses if needed. Dog lovers, your four-legged friends are welcome here, but do keep them leashed and remember to clean up after them.
