About Big Spring International Park

The Heart of Huntsville

Located in downtown Huntsville, Alabama, Big Spring International Park is a pretty green space and where the city's story began. The park's star attraction? A large spring that caught the eye of the first settlers over 200 years ago and continues to be the soul of the community today.

A Breath of Fresh Air

As you wander through the several acres of parkland, you can find yourself drawn to the picture-perfect lagoon with smooth paved paths hugging its edges. It's the kind of place that invites you to slow down, whether you're out for a morning walk or just need a quiet moment to yourself. Keep an eye out for the ducks and geese that call the lagoon home - they're local celebrities of sorts and always ready for their close-up (though maybe don't feed them your lunch).

Global Gifts in Green Space

The park features an interesting collection of international items that highlight Huntsville's connections around the world. The most eye-catching is the vivid Japanese Bridge, a red span surrounded by Yoshino cherry trees with a story behind it. The trees were originally donated by Mikio Kimata, a Japanese military officer who attended Redstone Arsenal's Ordnance Guided Missile School in the mid-1960s and wanted to thank Huntsville for its hospitality during his time there. He later went further, donating a "friendship bridge" to mark the U.S. Bicentennial, formally dedicated on May 3, 1977. By 1998 the bridge had aged enough to warrant serious work, and Kimata - by then a Major General - along with the Japanese Society of Alabama helped finance a renovation that restyled and expanded the structure.

Beyond the bridge, you'll also find a Norwegian lighthouse and fog bell, and an intricate sundial gifted by Germany. Each of these elements tells a story of friendship and collaboration across continents, adding layers of meaning to your park experience.

Where Community Comes Alive

Throughout the year, the park hosts various events including the Panoply Arts Festival and summer concert series under the stars. Panoply takes place on the last full weekend in April each year, drawing crowds from across the region for one of the park's signature annual gatherings of local and regional talent.

Downtown's Natural Haven

Big Spring International Park offers a natural retreat right in the middle of city life. Its central location makes it ideal for downtown workers seeking a peaceful lunch break or visitors looking to recharge. With maintained grounds and views of the city skyline, it provides a balance of nature and urban life - a calm spot in downtown.
