About the Location

A Walk Through History

Situated in Huntsville sits a green space with a story that runs deep. This urban park stands on hallowed ground - the former site of Dr. William Hooper Councill High School, the first public school established for African-American students in Huntsville.

For over 150 years, this school shaped minds and futures before eventually closing its doors. Now, the land has been thoughtfully reimagined as a place of remembrance and reflection.

Preserving What Came Before

What makes this park special is how carefully it honors its past. The designers didn't simply build over history - they embraced it. Working hand-in-hand with the William Hooper Councill High School Alumni Association, architects created spaces that mirror the footprint of the original school buildings. As you wander through, you're actually tracing the outline of former classrooms, the gymnasium, and the cafeteria where generations of students once gathered.

A Legacy Reborn

More than five decades after the school closed, this transformation has given new life to a historic site. The park serves to honor Dr. William Hooper Councill himself, whose vision extended beyond these grounds when he founded Alabama A&M University.

Here, among trees and open spaces, visitors can connect with Dr. Councill's educational ideals and reflect on the significant contributions of Huntsville's African-American community to the city's rich history. Here, the past connects meaningfully with the present.
