About the Location
Historical Significance
Cavalry Hill Park is named after the 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers who were encamped in the area following their service in the Spanish-American War. These African American troops, commanded by Army legend "Black Jack" Pershing, were initially sent to Huntsville's Monte Sano to recuperate from wounds and diseases brought back from the war.
After an incident between black and white soldiers, the Buffalo Soldiers were moved to what became known as 10th Cavalry Hill, from which the park derives its name. The park serves as a reminder of this important piece of local and national history.
