About Council High Memorial Park in Huntsville

Councill High Memorial Park is located on St. Clair Avenue in Huntsville, Alabama. This urban park holds significant historical importance as it stands on the site of Huntsville's first public school for African-American students, Dr. William Hooper Councill High School.

The park was thoughtfully designed to preserve and honor the legacy of the school, which operated for over 150 years before closing. Architects worked closely with the William Hooper Councill High School Alumni Association to create spaces that fit the footprint of the original school buildings, including classrooms, gymnasium, and cafeteria.

More than 50 years after the school's closure, this historic site has been transformed into a beautiful park that serves as a memorial to Dr. William Hooper Councill, the founder of Alabama A&M University. The park pays homage to Dr. Councill's ideals and provides an opportunity for visitors to reflect on the educational history of Huntsville's African-American community.
