Recreational Facilities
Sprawling across 25.3 acres of scenic landscapes, Jaycee Park offers a peaceful escape for anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors in Tuscaloosa.
The Tuscaloosa Tennis Center is one of the park's highlights, featuring six lighted tennis courts that let you practice your serve even after the sun goes down. Whether you're practicing competitive skills or just hitting balls with friends, the courts are well-maintained and ready for play.
There's a playground area that older kids will enjoy, but parents with little ones should know it's a bit limited for the tiniest visitors - there's just one toddler swing available, so plan accordingly if you've got a toddler in tow.
Disc golf enthusiasts will feel right at home at "The Hangar", a well-maintained course that welcomes everyone from first-timers to seasoned pros. Local disc golf players of various skill levels regularly visit to test their skills or enjoy a casual round.
Amenities
Planning a family get-together? The park's picnic areas and grilling stations make it easy to enjoy an outdoor meal surrounded by nature. The setup allows you to enjoy a meal while keeping an eye on children playing nearby.
Restroom facilities are available on-site, although they may not always be in pristine condition depending on when you visit all year long. It's always good to be prepared.
Historical Significance
A notable feature of Jaycee Park is the T-33 trainer plane displayed at the entrance. Nicknamed the "Shooting Star", this aircraft was a gift from the Air Force to Tuscaloosa back in 1963. In a pretty impressive feat of engineering, it was actually transported to the park by helicopter before the dedication ceremony on September 17, 1981.
The park itself honors Robert Ainsley Cardinal, Jr., who managed the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport from 1968 until he passed away in 1977. He was instrumental in developing the airport, overseeing runway extensions and terminal construction that helped shape the facility we know today.
Visitor Information
Most people tend to enjoy the park during daylight hours - it's definitely more of a daytime destination than an evening hangout spot.
Jaycee Park functions as a community space where locals gather for tennis matches and disc golf games, representing an important part of Tuscaloosa's outdoor recreation options.
