About the Location

A Bit of History

Tucked away next to Tuscaloosa Regional Airport sits Robert Cardinal Park, a local recreational spot established on September 17, 1981.

The park honors the memory of Robert Ainsley Cardinal, Jr., who managed the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport from 1968 until his passing in 1977. Cardinal wasn't just any administrator - he was the driving force behind major airport developments, including runway extensions and new facilities that helped shape what the airport is today.

Disc Golf Heaven

If you're into disc golf (or curious to try), you'll love the lightly wooded course aptly named "The Hangar". Established in 2021, this 18-hole course offers something for everyone - regardless of whether you're just figuring out how to throw or you've been playing for years.

The relatively flat terrain makes this spot particularly beginner-friendly, so don't worry if your disc-throwing skills are still a work in progress.

Cool Highlights

Right as you enter the park, you can't miss the T-33 trainer plane known as "Shooting Star" - a pretty impressive gift from the Air Force to Tuscaloosa back in 1963.

There's a neat bit of local lore here too: this plane originally stood at Jaycee Park but was actually airlifted by helicopter to its current spot before the park's dedication ceremony. Talk about making an entrance!

Plane-Spotting Paradise

One of the most unique aspects of Robert Cardinal Park is its front-row seat to all the airport action. You can watch aircraft take off and land while enjoying your time at the park - a real treat if you've got kids who light up at the sight of planes soaring overhead.

The playground area doubles as an excellent viewing spot, letting the little ones burn energy while potentially sparking an interest in aviation. It's that rare combination of fun and sneakily educational.

Recreation Options

Beyond planes and disc golf, the park offers a clean, well-kept space for all sorts of outdoor enjoyment. You'll come across picnic areas ideal for a family lunch, a playground for the kids, and dedicated spaces for disc golf enthusiasts to practice their technique.

The park doesn't skimp on practical amenities either - there are restrooms available, a covered shelter, and even a grilling area if you're in the mood for some outdoor cooking. All the essentials for spending a comfortable day outdoors are right here.
