About the Location
A Piece of Alaskan History
Positioned in Anchorage's Turnagain neighborhood, Balto Seppala Park spans 18 acres of public green space with a story to tell. Named after gold rush miner and legendary musher Leonhard Seppala and his heroic lead dog Balto, this park honors key figures from the 1925 serum run to Nome - a pivotal moment in Alaskan history. As you wander through, you'll spot informational displays about the famous Iditarod trail and the Balto story that bring this fascinating bit of Alaska's past to life.
What You'll Find Here
The park strikes a nice balance between developed recreational spaces and natural areas. There's plenty of open grassy space for throwing a frisbee or just lounging about, alongside a thoughtfully designed playground for the little ones (specifically aimed at ages 2-5). Worth noting is the playground's modern, ADA-accessible surface that ensures everyone can join in the fun.
Kids seem to gravitate toward the park's interesting climbing structure, swing sets, and the always-popular sandbox with diggers where budding construction workers can get their hands dirty. The tiniest visitors have their own special construction tractor play feature that's just right for toddling explorers.
When winter blankets Anchorage in snow, the park's sledding hill becomes a local hotspot. For the more athletically inclined, two soccer fields provide ample space for both organized matches and impromptu kickarounds.
Beyond the Basics
Planning a get-together? The park's covered picnic shelter with tables and a BBQ area makes for an ideal setting for birthday celebrations or casual community gatherings. Four-legged family members aren't forgotten either - the dog-friendly field gives your pup space to run and play.
One of the park's charming touches is its free book share library, a delightful surprise for families looking to combine outdoor time with a little reading. The small wooded areas with trails offer just enough adventure for kids who want to play explorer without venturing too far from sight.
Note that while there aren't permanent restrooms on-site, portable toilets are available to keep your visit comfortable.
Recent Upgrades
In 2014, the park got a significant refresh thanks to the Anchorage Park Foundation and Parks & Recreation Department. The improvements included new playground equipment, accessible surfacing in the play area, and the addition of the picnic shelter. The soccer fields were also reseeded, keeping the playing surface in good condition.
