About the Location

Park Overview

Next to the historic Grand Canal in Glendale, Arizona, the Grand Canal Linear Park stretches for a lovely 4.5 miles from 75th Avenue and Camelback Road all the way to 97th Avenue and Bethany Home Road. This green space follows the canal's natural path, providing a nice break from city life.

Whenever we visit, we're struck by how meticulously maintained the park is - clean spaces, beautiful greenery, and a calm atmosphere that makes you forget you're in the middle of a city. It's like finding a little slice of serenity in suburban Arizona.

Trail Features

The heart of the park is its paved, well-lit trail that's meant for pretty much any outdoor activity you can think of - walking, jogging, biking, or even horseback riding if that's your thing! The trail cleverly crosses the canal at various points, giving you different angles to appreciate the waterway.

One thing we like about this park is the tree coverage lining the paths. These trees provide shade during Arizona's warmer months and create a green corridor that feels more natural than urban. The terrain stays mostly flat, making it accessible for runners of all fitness levels, and the lighting helps you feel secure even during evening strolls.

If you're looking for a longer adventure, the trail connects with the New River Trail, opening up even more possibilities for exploring Glendale. Many locals use the park as their launching pad for extended rides or as a car-free route through the city.

Recreation Areas

Head to the eastern end near 75th Avenue and Camelback Road, and you'll discover a fully accessible playground complete with slides and swings. It's thoughtfully designed so children of all abilities can join in the fun.

Adults aren't left out either - the park features outdoor fitness equipment great for squeezing in a workout during your visit. Kids particularly enjoy the zipline attraction, but be aware that smaller children might need a boost to reach it properly.

Scattered across the park are several covered ramadas equipped with BBQ grills and water access. These spots are ideal for family picnics or casual get-togethers with friends, offering convenient places to relax and refuel after enjoying the trails.

Connectivity

What makes Grand Canal Linear Park especially useful is how it connects to other Glendale highlights, including Glendale Heroes Regional Park and the area surrounding State Farm Stadium. This design makes the park both a recreational space and a transportation route connecting different parts of the city.

You'll often see locals using the trails not just for exercise but as practical routes for commuting or accessing different neighborhoods more efficiently than navigating city streets. With multiple entry points along its length, the park is easily accessible for residents from surrounding areas.

Visitor Information

If you're driving, you'll find parking at the eastern end of the park just north of Camelback Road on 75th Avenue. The lot isn't huge, but additional parking spots are available at various points along the trail. Some access points only offer street parking in nearby neighborhoods, so plan accordingly.

Note that restroom facilities are limited or unavailable at certain entry points. If facilities are a priority for your visit, you might want to access the park from Glendale Heroes Regional Park instead.

Dog owners, you're in luck - the park is pet-friendly, and you'll regularly see people walking their four-legged friends along the trails. Just remember to clean up after your pup to keep the park enjoyable for everyone.
