Birchett Park
About Birchett Park
Park Overview
Located in Tempe, Arizona, Birchett Park is a charming pocket of greenery spanning about an acre. It's one of those small urban retreats that offers a moment of calm amidst the city bustle. The park bears the name of the Birchett family, early pioneers who helped shape Tempe into what it is today.
A Touch of History
The story behind this little park begins in 1903, when Guess Birchett first arrived in Tempe to visit her sister. What was meant to be a simple family visit turned into a lifetime in Arizona when she met Joseph Birchett, who would become her husband. Sometimes life's best journeys start with a simple hello, right?
Family Legacy
The Birchetts weren't just residents - they were community builders. Joseph partnered in his family's grocery business, sat on the Tempe City Council from 1930 to 1932, and served as a director of the Tempe National Bank.
Guess made her own mark on the community too. In 1936, she helped establish the Tempe Garden Club and contributed to the development of both this park and Moeur Park. Local schoolchildren knew her affectionately as the "Bird Lady" as they regularly toured her home and bird sanctuary - a testament to her connection with both nature and education.
Park Dedication
In 1984, the City of Tempe officially dedicated this green space as Birchett Park. It stands today as a living reminder of the Birchett family's numerous contributions to Tempe - a small but meaningful tribute to people who helped make this community what it is today.
