Parque de Soza Park
About Parque de Soza Park
A Piece of Tempe History
Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of major roads, Parque de Soza Park has been offering locals a peaceful retreat since 1960. In May 2009, this local park emerged fresh-faced after a major renovation - making it the first beneficiary of Tempe's park restoration program.
The park carries the legacy of the Soza family, whose roots run as deep as Tempe itself. Alongside the Sotelo family, these Mexican pioneers were among the city's founding pillars, literally building Tempe from the ground up. They dug canals, cleared farmland, raised livestock, and kept Charles Hayden's flour mill running - true architects of early Tempe.
Play Your Way
Whether you're an aspiring Tony Hawk or just looking to shoot some hoops, you'll find options here. Skaters will appreciate the skateboarding area with its steel ramps offering solid transition and a variety of elements - flat bars, handrails, hubbas, kickers, ledges, manual pads, quarterpipes, and spines.
When Arizona's famous heat kicks in, the splash pad becomes the place to be. Kids love running through the water features, especially when those dumping buckets unleash their refreshing surprise! For the sports-minded, the park offers lighted basketball courts (perfect for evening games) and a sand volleyball court for channeling your inner beach athlete.
At the heart of the park lies a large open field - a blank canvas for frisbee games, picnics, or simply lounging with a good book.
Family-Friendly Spaces
The park features two playground areas with equipment that caters to different age groups. Kids can enjoy slides and swings set in sand, all comfortably shaded - a true blessing during those scorching summer days.
Dotted throughout the park are multiple ramadas and picnic tables, with several featuring grills that make this spot well-suited for family cookouts. These covered areas provide welcome respite from the sun and create natural gathering spaces for community events.
Benches positioned around the grounds offer quiet spots to rest, people-watch, or simply enjoy the surroundings. Despite being in the city, the layout gives the park a cozy neighborhood feel that keeps locals coming back.
Practical Matters
You can find clean restroom facilities available during daylight hours. Dog parents will appreciate the pet-friendly drinking fountains and bag stations positioned conveniently around the park.
A walking track encircles the perimeter, making it easy to get your steps in while enjoying the scenery. The park's somewhat hidden location contributes to its calm atmosphere - a little urban oasis.
Art in the Park
Adding a touch of culture to your recreation, Parque de Soza features a thoughtful art installation called "Peace Labyrinth" created by artist Mark Lucking. It's a nice reminder that parks can nourish both body and soul.
