Corbell Park
About Corbell Park
Park Overview
Set in south central Tempe at the corner of Lakeshore and Chilton drives, Corbell Park spans a generous 11 acres of green space. Opened on April 7, 1984, it's one of the larger neighborhood parks in the area. Recently renovated, this park provides a quiet space away from busy main roads. It feels like one of those lesser-known spots that locals enjoy.
Historical Significance
The park pays tribute to Victor Corbell, an Arizona pioneer who left quite a mark on Tempe's business community. Born into an original Arizona pioneer family on January 31, 1894, Corbell wasn't just any resident.
He headed up the Salt River Project for 16 years, served on its board for nearly 35 years, and immersed himself in various community initiatives throughout his life.
Amenities and Recreation
The walking trails wind through the park, good for a casual stroll or finding a nice picnic spot.
If you're bringing the little ones, they'll love the newly renovated playground with its padded ground for safer tumbles and falls. Kids aged 5-10 might particularly enjoy the ninja warrior course - popular with energetic youngsters.
Sports fans haven't been forgotten either. You can shoot some hoops on the basketball courts, kick a ball around on the soccer field, or just find a patch of the wide, grassy areas for a game of frisbee or simply lounging on a blanket.
Picnic Facilities
The park offers several spots to enjoy an outdoor meal, with a few ramadas providing welcome shade from the Arizona sun. These areas work well for family get-togethers or just a quiet lunch break.
There are also grilling facilities available if you're in the mood for some outdoor cooking. Nothing beats a casual barbecue in the park with friends or family.
Dog-Friendly Features
Four-legged friends are welcome at Corbell Park, with plenty of space for walks (just remember to keep them leashed). The open areas give your pup good room to explore and get some exercise.
Note that during certain times of year, especially summer, parts of the park may be irrigated for grass maintenance, which can leave some muddy patches to navigate around.
Location and Accessibility
You can find the park just west of S. McClintock Drive and a few minutes from the 101 Loop North, making it pretty easy to get to from most parts of Tempe. It's open daily from 6AM to midnight, but you should know there aren't any public restrooms on site - something to plan for if you're thinking about a longer visit.
