About the Location
A Bit of History
Tucked away at the corner of Roosevelt Street and Manhattan Drive in Tempe, Arizona, Dwight Park spans a cozy 4 acres. This neighborhood space has been a community gathering spot since 1974.
Interestingly, it wasn't always called Dwight Park. It was originally known as Diamond Park because of its shape. In 1988, it was renamed to honor Joseph Dwight, a dedicated Tempe City Councilman, businessman, and civic leader who made his mark on the community.
Places to Play & Relax
Dwight Park strikes that perfect balance between active fun and peaceful relaxation. The wide open field gives you plenty of room to toss a frisbee, kick a ball around, or simply spread out a blanket and enjoy the Arizona sky.
Whether you're looking to break a sweat or just want to sit under a tree with a good book, this versatile little park offers both options.
Get Your Game On
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the well-maintained basketball court and soccer field. Whether you're shooting hoops with friends or organizing an impromptu soccer match, there's space for your favorite game.
For the little ones, there's a playground area complete with slides and various swings - including a fun tire swing that's always a hit. Parents can breathe a little easier knowing there's rubber padding beneath the play equipment to cushion any tumbles. And during those scorching Arizona days, the sun cover over the playground provides much-needed shade.
The Extra Touches
Planning to make a day of it? You'll come across five picnic areas with grills and benches - ideal for family gatherings or a weekend cookout with friends.
Staying hydrated is easy with the park's drinking fountain, a thoughtful necessity given Arizona's climate.
As evening approaches, lighting across the park keeps the space usable and safe even after sunset.
Dog parents, you're welcome to bring your leashed four-legged friends along for the adventure. The park thoughtfully provides dog waste bags and trash cans to help keep the grounds clean.
Natural Setting
What really makes Dwight Park special is its greenery. Mature trees provide generous shade spots - a precious commodity in Tempe - and create a refreshing natural oasis in the urban landscape. The park is typically well-maintained, but you might occasionally notice some playground equipment that's showing a bit of wear and tear from years of happy use.
