About the Location
A Piece of Tucson's Past
Situated in downtown Tucson, Armory Park spans 4 acres of history-rich ground. What started as Military Plaza Park has roots that stretch back to the Presidio era, when military personnel guarding Tucson's Presidio made this area their station.
The park's story begins in 1866 when it was established as Camp Lowell, a U.S. Army base that protected Tucson and contributed to the local economy.
The Fortress That Once Stood
In 1913, part of the former Camp Lowell grounds was handed over to Arizona for something special - the state's very first armory. Completed in 1914, this impressive masonry building featured castle-like towers and housed a basement rifle range, a main floor for drills, and offices upstairs.
The armory building was torn down in 1975, but the park still carries its name.
Honoring Those Who Served
Walk through Armory Park today and you'll encounter several monuments that tell stories of sacrifice and service. Memorials honor veterans of the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, and the Mormon Battalion of 1846.
Two informational plaques offer glimpses into the past - one showing Camp Lowell's soldiers with their families, and another depicting the original armory building in its full glory.
What You'll Find Today
Armory Park has evolved into a beloved neighborhood gathering space where the Tucson community comes to relax and play. The sprawling grassy area is dotted with mature trees that cast welcome shade on hot Arizona days.
You'll discover several picnic areas with benches and tables ideal for outdoor meals or afternoon reading. Water fountains help you stay hydrated, and evening visits are comfortable thanks to good lighting within the grounds.
For the Community
The park houses a senior community center serving adults 60 and older. If you're in this age group, you can enjoy daily activities and hot meals Monday through Friday between 3-4 PM (a donation is suggested but not required).
Need to use the restroom? Facilities are available inside the community center, with additional portable options outside. And if your phone's battery is running low, the center offers convenient charging stations.
Getting There
Armory Park sits right across from the Children's Museum Tucson, making it a fantastic extension of a family outing. Getting here is easy via SunTran bus routes or the light rail if you're using public transportation.
If you're driving, you can find metered parking spaces around the park's perimeter.
Community Life
Throughout the year, the park hosts various community gatherings. These include the annual St. Patrick's Day Festival with Irish food, music, and dance, the Peace and Music Festival, several beer festivals, and the Tucson Parade of Lights during holiday season.
Dog owners, your furry friends are welcome - just keep them leashed. For those with green thumbs, the community garden managed by Community Gardens of Tucson offers a chance to grow your own produce right in the heart of the city.
