About the Location
Disc Golf Course Features
The heart of Groves Park is its disc golf course, which has become something of a local favorite here in Tucson. The course follows a unique "there-and-back" U-turn layout - front nine holes are marked with red tee signs, while the back nine sport yellow tee signs to keep you on track.
What's nice about this course is how it caters to everyone. The 'A pad' layout tends to be the crowd-pleaser, complete with specific out-of-bounds areas and mandatory obstacles for those looking for a challenge. If you're just starting out or want to mix things up, the B and C pad options have got you covered too. For instance, hole #5 will have you throwing left of a sizable mesquite tree, and hole #7/#11 features an island green with a designated drop zone if things don't go as planned.
The course maintenance is actually pretty impressive - newly updated baskets get moved around between multiple locations regularly, which keeps things fresh if you're a frequent player. You can check out the current basket placements on the map in the center of the parking lot or, if you're tech-savvy, just pull up the UDisc app.
Park Landscape and Accessibility
The park itself offers a nice blend of natural and developed spaces. It's mostly flat terrain, making it easy to navigate for just about everyone. You'll find well-kept grassy areas with plenty of mature trees providing much-needed shade during those scorching Arizona summer days.
Three sides of the park are embraced by desert landscape, offering a pretty spectacular 360-degree vista of the surroundings. If you're into sunset-watching, many locals will tell you this is one of Tucson's quiet retreats for catching those breathtaking evening skies.
Playground and Picnic Areas
If you've got kids in tow, the newly renovated playground is a nice spot for them to burn off some energy. There's plenty of mulch ground covering and shade structures to keep the play area cooler. No swings, unfortunately, but enough other play structures to keep the little ones entertained.
Within the park, you'll come across picnic tables and BBQ grills scattered about - great for a family lunch or refueling after a round of disc golf. Just remember to bring your own charcoal if you're planning to grill. The picnic spots are well-maintained and offer a pleasant setting for an outdoor meal.
Additional Amenities
Staying hydrated is easy with the park's drinking fountains, which come in multiple heights including a ground-level option specifically for four-legged friends. As for restrooms, there's a porta-potty rather than permanent facilities, so plan accordingly.
Groves Park is dog-friendly with plenty of open space for walks, but you'll want to keep an eye out for flying discs if you're wandering through the course area. Local residents seem to appreciate the park's cleanliness and community feel, making it a neighborhood staple for outdoor recreation.
