About the Location

A Piece of Tucson's Past

Tucked away in the heart of Tucson sits David G. Herrera and Ramon Quiroz Park, a green space with some serious history behind it. Dating back to 1902 when the city first acquired this 6.6-acre plot, it's one of the oldest parks you'll come across in Tucson's entire system.

It wasn't always known by its current name though. Originally called Oury Park after William S. Oury (a local figure who lived in Tucson from 1856 to 1887), it made history as one of the first parks in the city to boast both a community center and a pool. In 2001, the park got its current name to honor two former Oury Center recreation coordinators who made a real difference in the lives of kids growing up in the Barrio Anita Neighborhood.

Get Your Game On

If you're looking to stay active, this neighborhood space offers several options. The park features well-maintained softball fields with lighting for those evening games when the Arizona sun isn't quite so intense.

More of a basketball person? You'll discover basketball courts here too, sheltered under a protective ramada and lit up for night play. For the little ones, there's a modest but perfectly functional playground area where they can burn off some energy.

Beat the Heat

Let's be honest - Tucson gets hot. Really hot. That's why the free public swimming pool and wading pool at this park are such treasures. When temperatures climb, the free pool provides welcome relief from the heat.

Bringing People Together

The on-site recreation center hosts various special events, while the park's ramadas offer good spots for birthday parties, family reunions, or weekend picnics. You'll discover concrete tables with benches that make outdoor meals a breeze.

Need to park? No problem. There's a decent-sized lot, and when that fills up, you can always find a spot on the unpaved areas nearby.

Cultural Canvas

One of the most striking features of the park has to be its Mexican American murals that beautifully represent the heritage of Barrio Anita. These colorful artworks aren't just pretty to look at - they're a meaningful connection to the neighborhood's cultural identity. Though they could use a touch-up from time to time, they remain a highlight for many visitors.

The Practical Stuff

You'll come across clean, maintained restroom facilities within the park - always a plus when you're spending the day outdoors. While Arizona can be unforgiving sun-wise, the grounds do offer some welcome tree shade here and there.

Need to grab something from the store? The park's location puts you within easy walking distance of nearby shops. And if you're a dog owner, you'll be happy to know the park is dog-friendly with plenty of open spaces where your four-legged friend can stretch their legs.
