Park Overview

Nestled along North Rodney Parham Road in Little Rock, Arkansas, Butler Park spans a modest 6.7 acres of level, tree-covered terrain. The park sits right beside Grassy Flat Creek, creating a surprisingly tranquil pocket of nature despite being so close to one of the city's busier roads. The mature trees within the park create a welcoming canopy of shade that's particularly appreciated during those sweltering Arkansas summers.

History

The park exists thanks to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Richard C. Butler, who donated the land to Little Rock. Development began back in 1968 with the addition of a ballfield and picnic areas.

It's interesting to note how the area has transformed over time. What was once a predominantly rural setting has since been enveloped by urban development along Rodney Parham Road, making Butler Park an even more valuable green space for the community.

Recreational Facilities

Butler Park offers several outdoor activity options. There's a small playground with some classic metal equipment that kids can enjoy, alongside a basketball court and tennis courts for sports enthusiasts. Note that the basketball court sits close to the creek, so you'll want to keep a closer eye on younger players.

Sports fans can make use of the baseball/softball field, while those seeking a bit of exercise might appreciate the paved walking trail that winds through the grounds, excellent for a leisurely stroll or a brisk walk.

Additional Amenities

Scattered around the park are several concrete picnic tables where you can enjoy a packed lunch or simply sit and watch the world go by. Drinking fountains are available when you need to hydrate, and there are restroom facilities on-site, although they're not always reliably accessible.

For disc golf enthusiasts, the park features three baskets that are ideal for practice throws. Perhaps the park's greatest natural amenity is its generous tree canopy, providing much-needed shade and creating a cooler microclimate within the park bounds.

One of Butler Park's charms is its relatively quiet atmosphere compared to some of Little Rock's more popular parks. If you're looking to avoid crowds, this might be your spot. While easily accessible, the park is best enjoyed during daylight hours.

It's worth mentioning that maintenance can be hit-or-miss, with some areas occasionally showing signs of neglect. Despite these challenges, Butler Park provides a green space for the surrounding neighborhood - a small retreat from urban life.
