About Murray Park

Riverside Oasis

Located next to the Arkansas River, Murray Park is a sprawling 166-acre urban retreat in Little Rock. Born in 1976 thanks to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (with a price tag of about $2.25 million), this peaceful sanctuary sits just downstream from Murray Lock and Dam on land the Corps leases to the city. The riverside setting provides a natural escape where locals often come to unwind in the outdoors.

Trails and Views

If you're looking to stretch your legs while soaking in some scenery, Murray Park is a great choice. The network of walking and biking trails that meander alongside the Arkansas River offer a great backdrop for your outdoor adventures.

The Arkansas River Trail cuts through the park, connecting you to other parts of Little Rock and drawing plenty of cyclists, joggers, and walkers. The river breeze and smooth paved pathways can make daily exercise more enjoyable.

Recreation Facilities

Murray Park offers a variety of recreation options. The grounds host a variety of sports facilities, picnic spots, and open spaces fantastic for both organized activities and spontaneous fun.

Beach volleyball enthusiasts will appreciate the nine volleyball courts that stay well-maintained year-round and host both casual games and competitive tournaments. If soccer's more your speed, the spacious soccer fields provide plenty of room to practice your footwork or set up a proper match.

Families with young ones gravitate toward the large playground with its recently upgraded equipment. It's become something of a hotspot for parents looking to let their kids burn off some energy in a safe, engaging environment.

Dog-Friendly Areas

Your four-legged friends aren't forgotten at Murray Park. Paws Park, the dedicated off-leash area, features thoughtfully separated sections for large dogs (over 35 pounds) and small pups (under 35 pounds).

Inside this dog park, you can find a paved walking path, shady spots, benches, and water stations for your pet. Tennis balls and play structures keep the dogs entertained, while the social atmosphere makes it just as enjoyable for the humans watching their pets make new friends.

Water Activities and Amenities

The Arkansas River isn't just for looking at - though the views are certainly photo-worthy. Fishing enthusiasts can cast their lines from the shore, while boaters appreciate the multiple boat ramps that provide easy river access.

Planning a gathering? The park's pavilions, many positioned with lovely water views, can be reserved for events from family reunions to birthday celebrations. These covered areas come equipped with picnic tables, offering shelter and seating for your group.

Facilities and Parking

You won't need to circle endlessly looking for a spot - Murray Park features generous parking lots across the grounds that can handle the crowds even on busy weekends. Restroom facilities are available, but they can get a bit crowded during popular events.

When you need a break, you can find water fountains and picnic areas scattered conveniently across the park, meant for catching your breath or enjoying a packed lunch between activities.

Recent History

Nature hasn't always been gentle with this cherished space. In 2023, Murray Park suffered significant damage when a devastating tornado tore through Little Rock on March 31. The storm claimed many trees in its path, but restoration efforts have already begun, with replanting initiatives helping the park slowly heal from this natural disaster.

Despite this setback, Murray Park remains an important gathering place for Little Rock residents. The park combines natural beauty with various recreational options along its riverside grounds.
