Hindman Park
About Hindman Park
Natural Landscape
Found in the southeastern corner of Little Rock, Arkansas, Hindman Park spreads across a generous 210 acres of natural beauty. The park's gently-rolling, tree-covered terrain sits right beside one of the main tributaries of Fourche Creek, creating a peaceful retreat from city life.
The park features a diverse blend of ecosystems - from wetlands to shady forest areas and even some mountain terrain. This natural diversity isn't just pretty to look at; it creates perfect conditions for outdoor activities and provides a haven for local wildlife going about their daily business.
Recreational Activities
For those interested in fishing, the park's water areas contain a variety of fish species. In the past, the park has hosted fishing derbies, bringing the community together for some friendly competition on the water.
More of a land-sport person? No problem. The park offers basketball courts, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and softball fields for your athletic endeavors. There's also a disc golf course available for those interested in this increasingly popular sport.
History and Development
Hindman Park has been a Little Rock fixture since 1965, named after Biscoe Hindman whose estate generously contributed $50,000 toward making the park a reality. When it first opened, visitors could enjoy a simple ballfield and playground.
The park expanded in 1971 with the addition of an 18-hole golf course and clubhouse, made possible with help from the U.S. Bureau of Outdoor Recreation. More recreational options appeared in 1976 and 1977, broadening what the park had to offer.
A significant change came in 2019 when the golf course closed. Since then, some areas of the park haven't received the same level of attention as before, giving parts of Hindman a slightly wilder feel.
Amenities
When you visit Hindman Park, you can find all the essentials for a comfortable outdoor experience. Picnic areas and shelters offer perfect spots to enjoy a meal surrounded by nature. Paved paths wind throughout the grounds, ideal for a morning jog or leisurely afternoon stroll.
Kids will appreciate the playground, while open grassy areas provide space for impromptu games of frisbee or catch. And yes, there are restrooms and parking lots available - sometimes it's the simple things that make a park visit more enjoyable.
Future Plans
Changes might be coming for Hindman Park. The Little Rock Parks and Recreation Department has been actively gathering public input for a proposed Master Plan to breathe new life into this natural space.
The plan would develop new amenities for the park.
