About Union Park
A Piece of History in Little Rock
Tucked away at the intersection of 36th and Potter streets in Little Rock, Arkansas, Union Park spans 10 acres of green space with a story that runs deeper than its lush grass. Back in 1925, when segregation limited recreational options, the Colored Sunday School Union purchased this land to create something essential - a place where the African American community could gather, play, and connect at a time when such spaces were frustratingly scarce.
The park's history took an interesting turn in 1935 when the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Company 3777 constructed a beautiful recreational building on the grounds. With its distinctive log and native stone design reminiscent of state park lodges from that era, it must have been quite the community centerpiece. Though fire later claimed most of this structure, you can still spot remnants of its foundation today - little whispers of history beneath your feet.
From Neglect to Renewal
Like many historic spaces, Union Park went through a rough patch, falling into disrepair before finding new life when the City of Little Rock acquired it in 1967. For a while, it wore the name West End Park until 2008, when it reclaimed its original identity as Union Park - a fitting tribute to its meaningful origins.
Today, this green space is a neighborhood haven where locals come to breathe a little easier away from the urban hustle. While modern updates have made the park more functional for today's visitors, there's something special about seeing the original stone foundation and fireplace from that 1935 CCC building still standing their ground after all these years.
Places to Play
If you're looking to burn some energy, Union Park offers several options. The baseball field offers plenty of open space not just for America's pastime, but for whatever activity strikes your fancy. You might even spot some neighborhood dogs having the time of their lives chasing balls across the outfield. Basketball more your thing? The park's basketball court stands ready for pickup games and practice shots alike.
Families particularly appreciate the well-maintained playground where kids can climb, slide, and swing to their hearts' content. Kids can play while parents and guardians relax nearby.
Gathering Spaces
The park's pavilion provides a sheltered spot for gatherings. No matter if you're planning a family reunion, birthday celebration, or just a casual weekend picnic, the covered picnic area provides a comfortable place to share food and conversation.
Note that Union Park currently doesn't have public restrooms, so you might want to plan accordingly. The gates are open daily from 6AM to 5:15PM, giving you plenty of daylight hours to enjoy this historic neighborhood haven throughout the week.
