About the Location
Community Heritage
Located in the western part of Little Rock, Arkansas, Pankey Park is a central green space in the historically African-American Pankey community. Named after Josephine Irvin Harris Pankey - an educator, real estate developer, and philanthropist - this park offers a place where neighbors connect and where the community's cultural roots remain visible.
2024 Makeover
If you've visited recently, you might have noticed quite a transformation. In 2024, the park got a serious refresh thanks to a city bond project. The city invested about $170,000 to revitalize this community space.
The makeover included a brand-new pavilion (good for family gatherings in the hot Arkansas sun), a spruced-up basketball court, and fresh playground equipment that's popular with the neighborhood kids.
What You'll Find
You can explore the walking trails that wind through the grounds - suitable for morning jogs or afternoon walks. There's plenty of open space too, whether you're looking to toss a frisbee or just find a quiet spot to read.
The newly renovated basketball court is often busy with friendly competitions and impromptu games.
Community Milestone
The park's renewal was officially celebrated on October 28, 2024, when Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. joined residents for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The ceremony celebrated both the new equipment and the importance of public spaces in the community.
The renovated Pankey Park stands as a testament to how public spaces can honor the past while building toward the future.
