About the Location
A Glimpse Into the Past
Nestled along the Santa Ana River in Anaheim, Yorba Regional Park spans 175 acres of lush greenery. This linear park has quite the backstory - it was once part of a Spanish land grant to Don Bernardo Yorba before Orange County acquired it in 1972. By 1976, it had opened its gates to the public.
What You'll Find
Stretching over a mile in length, this park features four interconnected lakes with flowing streams that create a peaceful atmosphere amid busy Southern California.
If fishing is your thing, you're in luck. The lakes are home to catfish, trout, bluegill, and bass. You might even spot some enthusiasts with their electric model boats, especially on Thursdays when RC boat meetings typically take place.
The park is generously dotted with mature trees that provide welcome shade and create a fantastic setting for flying kites, tossing frisbees, or simply enjoying a leisurely walk. Wildlife abounds here too - ducks, geese, turtles, and squirrels make regular appearances, along with a variety of birds that bird-watchers will appreciate.
Picnic Paradise
Yorba Regional Park offers excellent picnic facilities. With roughly 400 picnic tables and 200 barbecue stations scattered throughout, you'll never struggle to find a spot for your outdoor feast.
Planning something bigger? The park features seven group picnic shelters available for reservation, with the largest able to host up to 250 people. These shelters are excellent for family reunions, birthday celebrations, or any gathering that calls for some fresh air and natural beauty.
Even on hot days, those abundant shade trees keep things comfortable, and there are plenty of trash cans around to help keep the park clean and beautiful.
Stay Active
The park caters to all ages with six playgrounds strategically placed throughout the grounds. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and two softball fields.
For those looking to mix their nature time with a workout, the par course offers various fitness stations along the trails - a natural gym with a view!
Trails and Natural Splendor
Paved trails meander through the park, great for walking, jogging, or a leisurely bike ride. These paths aren't isolated either - they connect to the Santa Ana River Trail, which extends about 20 miles southwest all the way to Huntington Beach.
If horseback riding is more your style, you'll appreciate the designated horse trails along the riverside. The wide, shaded walking paths make this spot a favorite for dog walkers and families out for a stroll.
Despite being surrounded by urban development, Yorba Regional Park manages to feel like a secluded retreat. It's particularly cherished by birders who come to spot the various species that call this park home all year long.
Make a Splash
Want to get out on the water? Head to Wheel Fun Rentals, the concession stand near the lakes, where you can rent bikes, paddleboats, quad-cycles, and kayaks. The swan-shaped paddleboats are especially charming and a hit with families.
Just note that rental bikes need to stay within park boundaries and can't venture onto the Santa Ana River Trail, but they're great for exploring the extensive grounds.
Good to Know
The park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM to 6PM. There's a parking fee of $3 on weekdays and $5-7 on weekends and holidays. If you're a frequent visitor, consider an annual OC Parks pass, which gives you access to this and other Orange County regional parks.
You can find clean, well-maintained restrooms around the park, plus water fountains that thoughtfully include ground-level features for four-legged friends.
Speaking of which, dogs are more than welcome here, although they must stay leashed to protect the local wildlife. Remember to clean up after your pet to help keep this beautiful space pristine for everyone to enjoy.
