James Kenney Park

Park Overview

Tucked into Northwest Berkeley, James Kenney Park spans a modest 3.9 acres but offers a lot for its size. Named after Berkeley's first fire chief, James J. Kenney, this clean, well-maintained space is a nice neighborhood park.

It's not trying to be Golden Gate Park - it's simply a fantastic little city park that serves its community well.

Playground Paradise

Parents, you can find two distinct playground zones here. For the littlest adventurers (ages 2-5), there's a fully enclosed, baby-proofed tot lot with plenty for toddlers to enjoy.

Think slides, climbing spots, tunnels, bouncy toys, a bridge, interactive playhouses, music features, and of course, a sand area for budding architects.

The bigger kids (5-12) haven't been forgotten, with their own playground featuring slides, climbing challenges, swings, spinny things that will make you dizzy just watching, a balancing sling, and monkey bars. Many parents appreciate the secure gate handles and enclosed design of the tot lot - one less thing to worry about while you catch up on texts (or, you know, actually watch your kids play).

Fresh Additions

As of December 2020, James Kenney got some serious upgrades. The renovations brought in a large climbing structure that challenges even the most energetic kids, a spiderweb swing that's usually the source of "five more minutes" pleas, and an interactive tot area that keeps the little ones engaged.

Underfoot, you'll discover fresh wood chips and cushy rubber mats near the play structures and swings - a thoughtful touch for inevitable tumbles.

Sports Central

Active types can take their pick from multiple courts and a field. Whether you're into baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, or pickleball, there's a space for your game.

The field area works well for impromptu soccer matches too. New sidewalks circle the park, meant for little ones still mastering their scooter or bike skills.

Getting There & Getting Comfortable

Cyclists will appreciate that the park sits right off a Bicycle Boulevard, making for an easy two-wheeled commute. While shade isn't abundant (bring that sunscreen!), there are plenty of places to rest, including picnic tables, benches, and wooden blocks that cleverly double as both seating and climbing structures.

Looking for lunch spots? A paved area with picnic tables sits right next to the playground and ball fields - ideal for family picnics or snack breaks.

Community Hub

The James Kenney Community Center is located in the park and offers various programs throughout the year. The center includes a gymnasium that can accommodate up to 500 people, making it a go-to spot for community events.

You can even rent spaces here for your own gatherings - from birthday parties to local meetings.
