About the Location
History and Dedication
Set in the heart of Burbank, George Izay Park spans 15 acres along W. Olive Avenue. Back in September 1984, the park was renamed to honor George Izay, a dedicated public servant who devoted over 28 years to the Park, Recreation and Community Services Department - with an impressive 21 of those years as the Department Director.
Recreational Facilities
This green oasis offers a little something for everyone in the sports department. You'll find well-kept baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, and the increasingly popular pickleball courts where locals often gather for friendly matches.
One can't-miss feature is the impressive Lockheed F-104D-15-LO Starfighter jet monument, installed in 1984 as a tribute to Lockheed Corporation, which provided jobs to Burbank residents for many years.
If indoor activities are more your style, check out the indoor gymnasium with its recently renovated flooring - ideal for shooting hoops or participating in other indoor sports when the California sun gets a bit too intense.
Playground and Family Areas
The playground features a charming train theme and equipment that accommodates children of different ages, making it popular with local families. Parents can relax under the shade of mature trees while keeping an eye on the little ones.
You'll appreciate the clean restrooms that stay open throughout park hours and are reliably stocked with supplies (a small detail that makes a big difference when you're spending the day outdoors). The abundant shade throughout the park is a true blessing during those warm Southern California days.
Community Amenities
The park is home to the Olive Recreation Center, which provides additional indoor spaces for community activities. Art enthusiasts will want to explore the Betsy Lueke Art Center, offering various creative classes from basic art techniques to jewelry making.
Around the grounds, you'll discover plenty of picnic tables and benches - perfect spots to enjoy a family meal, read a book, or simply watch the world go by. The level, well-maintained grassy areas invite casual games of frisbee or flying drones (when the baseball fields aren't in use).
With its central location in Burbank, George Izay Park is a popular gathering place for the community. Whether you're looking to play sports, enjoy a picnic, or simply find a peaceful spot under a tree, this urban retreat offers a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
