Park Overview

Located within Chico is Bidwell Park, one of America's largest municipal parks that offers a natural escape from the urban environment. The sprawling natural haven extends for miles, with the One-Mile Recreation Area situated in Lower Bidwell Park just a few blocks from Downtown Chico. You can easily access it from East 4th Street whenever the outdoor mood strikes - the park welcomes visitors daily from 5AM to 11PM.

Sycamore Pool

The main attraction of One-Mile Recreation Area is Sycamore Pool - a clever combination of natural waterway and human design. Built around Big Chico Creek in the 1930s, this concrete pool stretches across about 3 acres and is beautifully shaded by the majestic sycamore trees that lend it its name.

Families with kids particularly appreciate the roped-off shallow section and the peace of mind that comes with the five lifeguard stations (staffed during summer months). The pool's depth ranges from just knee-deep in some spots to nearly 6 feet near the dam gate, so there's something for everyone - from tentative toe-dippers to confident swimmers. When Chico gets hot in summer, the creek-fed natural pool offers a great place to cool off.

Park Features

One-Mile Recreation Area has flat terrain with plenty of trees that provide good shade on hot days. Paved paths wind through the area, excellent for leisurely strolls or more energetic activities.

If you're visiting with little ones, you can find multiple playgrounds within the park, including the beloved Caper Acres play area with its variety of play structures and dedicated picnic spaces. Speaking of picnics, you'll discover plenty of tables and benches scattered throughout, many complete with barbecue grills for that perfect outdoor meal.

When nature calls, you won't be left stranded - public restrooms are conveniently located near the playground and on both sides of Sycamore Pool.

Recreational Activities

Beyond swimming, Bidwell Park has many outdoor activities available. Pack a lunch and claim one of the picnic areas, challenge friends to a softball game, or test your aim with horseshoe pitching.

The extensive network of paved trails beckons walkers, joggers, cyclists, and scooter enthusiasts alike. Four-legged family members are welcome too, but they need to stay leashed in most areas.

Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife - you might spot otters playing under the bridge that crosses Big Chico Creek. The park also makes a wonderful backdrop for celebrations of all kinds, from birthday parties to family reunions. During summer, you can even grab a refreshing mangoneada, ice treat, or snack from vendors in the park.
